Turkey Tips

Here are a few tips that will ensure a safe Thanksgiving meal for your family and friends:

Planning

  • Plan your menu ahead and make sure that you have enough refrigerator and freezer space.
  • If you plan on buying a fresh turkey, purchase it 1-2 days before cooking. When purchasing a whole turkey, figure approximately one pound per person.

Thawing

  • Thaw the turkey in the refrigerator or in cold water. Never thaw the turkey on the counter.
  • When thawing the turkey in the refrigerator, allow about 24 hours per 5 pounds of turkey.
  • When thawing the turkey in cold water, submerge the turkey completely and change the water every 30 minutes. Allow 30 minutes of defrosting time per pound of turkey.
  • After thawing, the turkey can be kept refrigerated for only 1-2 days before using.

Preparation

  • Have a roasting pan large enough to hold your turkey.
  • Make sure to cook any meats used in the stuffing before placing them inside the bird.
  • Cook the turkey for approximately 20 minutes per pound of turkey.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the turkey. Check the temperature in the thigh. When it reaches 180° F it is safe to eat.
  • After cooking the turkey, carefully remove it from the oven. Immediately remove the stuffing.

Storing Leftovers

  • Cut the turkey into small pieces and refrigerate within 2 hours after cooking.
  • Use leftover turkey within 3-4 days and gravy within 1-2 days.
