Better Life Through Better Health

Some is Better than None

The 1996 Surgeon General Report on Physical Activity and Health concludes there is a clear link between physical activity and good health. So keep reading if you don't care to work up a sweat in jazz aerobics or by training for the Crim. Some activity is better than none.

People can become more fit by becoming moderately active. Activity is moderate when it happens for 30 minutes a day for five or more days a week. According to the report there are simple, fun ways to make fitness a part of everyday life.

To get started, make a plan with a list of activities you enjoy, and go from there.

  • Trips to zoo, park or museum, bike rides with the kids or even a little light-hearted wrestling.
  • Turn on the radio and dance after dinner.
  • Park further away from the door when going to work, church, or shopping.
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Walk the children to school or take a brisk stroll during your breaks or at lunch.
  • Rake the leaves, wash the car, vigorously clean the bathtub or windows.

It may take a little extra effort to get started, but you will feel better immediately and the benefits will be long lasting! Remember to always check with your doctor for advice about beginning a new physical activity routine.
