SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE
Each year 12 million Americans are diagnosed with a sexually
transmitted disease (STD). The United States has the highest STD rate in
the developed world. In spite of their widespread nature, many people
are not well informed about STDs.
A STD is simply a disease that is spread through sexual contact. Like
other infections, microorganisms (germs) cause STDs. These germs can
infect the genitals, the throat, and the rectum and can be spread during
vaginal, anal, and oral sex. There are at least 25 different STDs. Some,
such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, are caused by bacteria. Others,
including genital warts, genital herpes, and Hepatitis B, are caused by
viruses.
Some common symptoms of STDs include:
- A discharge from the genitals or rectum that can be clear, white,
green, or yellow.
- Burning when urinating.
- Rashes and sores or lumps and bumps on or near the genitals or
rectum.
- Women may experience irregular periods and pelvic pain.
Some people who have a STD may not show any signs or symptoms. Even
without symptoms an infected person can pass a STD to a partner. If
someone has a STD, his or her partner should also be tested and treated.
STDs can be diagnosed by a health care professional. Bacterial
infections can be cured with proper antibiotic medicines. Viral
infections can be treated and symptoms controlled.
People who don’t have sex are not at risk for STDs. Those who are
sexually active can use latex condoms for protection. Staying with one
partner or limiting numbers of partners will decrease risk. If you think
that you may have a STD, contact your
doctor or call the Genesee County Health Department at (810) 257-3440.
