Obnoxious House Guests

We don't mean your cousin and his wife who don't know when to go home. We are referring to hazardous waste materials that may be collecting around the house. Do you have old bug sprays or fertilizers, oil-based paint, motor oil or batteries that you would like to get rid of? What about old medicine, rat poison, pool chemicals or drain cleaner? These common household items can be toxic. The best way to dispose of them is at a local Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. There are collection days scheduled for the spring and fall across Genesee County. Contact the Genesee County Health Department, Environmental Health Division at (810) 257-3603 for details.

Materials labeled corrosive, toxic, reactive or flammable could be candidates for the collection. Unused latex paint is not accepted at the collection and should be given to community painting projects. Never pour hazardous materials down the drain or toilet, unless that is what they are made for. Don't bury hazardous wastes, or put them out with regular garbage. Hazardous waste materials, even from our homes, can contaminate groundwater or create other environmental problems. When you do use up materials, its okay to dispose of the container with your regular garbage. Remember to remove lids or caps and to recycle recyclable containers.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days help reduce pollution of water and soil. They also save landfill space and make your garage or basement a healthier place.
