Better Life Through Better Health
Is the water safe to swim in?
Consider the following points when choosing
your favorite beach.
The safest beaches have the following
features:
- Coarse sand or pea gravel bottoms.
- A gentle slope rather than a sudden drop
off.
- Docks or rafts with a minimum of 12 inches
of air space under them.
- Waste cans to decrease the risk of broken
glass or debris.
- Bathroom facilities located nearby.
Smart choices lead to personal safety:
- Learn CPR and basic lifesaving techniques.
- Basic safety equipment is kept nearby –
a ring buoy attached to 30 feet of rope, a
first aid kit, and a long reaching pole.
- Never swim alone – always swim with
another person.
- Know where the nearest phone is in case of
emergency.
- Make sure water is at least 10 or 12 feet
deep before diving in.
- Know where the cold spots, boat traffic,
and current are.
Good water quality criteria prevents danger:
- The water should be clear enough to see a
white object 6 inches in diameter placed
four feet beneath the water surface.
- Algae and weed growth should be minimal.
- Check
with your local health department to
determine whether E. coli bacteria levels
are at an acceptable level. E. coli bacteria
indicate the presence of animal and human
feces.
Have a safe and healthy swimming season!
