Fad Diets - Why Not?

Fad diets that promote easy, quick weight loss have been around for many years. Yet Americans are more obese today than ever before. Approximately 25% of men and 45% of women are trying to lose weight. Over 33 billion dollars are spent each year in the U. S. on weight control products and services.

Diets that promote rapid initial weight loss will satisfy a person’s need for quick results. These diets often drastically reduce the amount of calories eaten. They may severely restrict consumption of sugar or fat or eliminate complete food groups from the diet. These diets can be hard to maintain over time because the dieter feels hungry and cannot satisfy that hunger because of the diet’s restrictions. Any weight loss will be gained back, because the diet cannot be maintained for the long term.

To lose weight, make diet and exercise changes that will last a lifetime. The changes needed by each person are different. One standard weight management program does not work for everyone. Before deciding what plan is best for you, consider these suggestions to judge whether a weight loss program is just another fad or is a plan that you can stay with.

A sensible weight management program includes:

  • A plan that includes foods from each of the food groups, especially an increase in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
  • Calorie levels that will avoid constant hunger or do not promote rapid weight loss.
  • Regular physical activity with 30 minutes of exercise each day.

Weight management is an ongoing process that cannot be fixed with short-term solutions. To stay healthy, develop habits that promote a healthier lifestyle. Before beginning an exercise program, check with a health professional.
