Health Benefits of Eating Soy Foods

Soy foods have been linked to a number of health benefits. Eating more soy may help prevent heart disease and cancer, protect bones, and lessen menopause symptoms. In cultures where soy is a main source of protein, there is less heart disease and some types of cancers.

Evidence has been the strongest for heart disease. Soy protein included in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol helps decrease coronary heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels. The Food and Drug Association (FDA) recommends that consumers include four servings (25 grams) of soy protein in their diet each day to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Soy contains compounds called isoflavones which are similar to the natural body hormone estrogen. Eating soy may help relieve symptoms of menopause in women. Soy may also prevent bone weakening from osteoporosis as we age.

Soy protein products can be a good substitute for animal protein in the diet. Sources of soy foods can be found at your local supermarket or health food store. Popular soy foods include soymilk, tofu, roasted soybeans and soy meat replacers, such as soy burgers and nuggets. The American Dietetic Association recommends introducing soy slowly by adding small amounts to the daily diet or mixing into existing foods. Because some soy products have a mild or neutral flavor, it is possible to add soy to dishes and barely know it is there.
