Sometimes moms just need a little help working through problems, getting information on housing and eating right, getting baby clothes or other items, making and keeping doctor appointments, infant bonding, advice, and health care questions. Healthy Start is a group of organizations (Genesee County Health Department, Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, Genesys Home and Hospice Care and Hurley Medical Center) that works together to help moms and babies with various health-related needs. We help African American women who are pregnant and African American and bi-racial children ages 0-2 who live in zip codes 48503, 48504, 48505, 48507 or 48458. Healthy Start is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Each of our partners provides a variety of services. Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties provides moms with community health outreach workers who deliver services such as one-on-one support, referrals for food, clothing, transportation, etc., help with insurance applications, help scheduling and keeping appointments, and home visits.

Genesys Home and Hospice Care and Hurley Medical Center provide moms the Maternal  Infant Health Program (MIHP) which includes nutrition information, answers about pregnancy, support and counseling, breastfeeding support, connection with health care and other resources, answers about child development, immunizations and home visits.

The Genesee County Healthy Start is a member of the National Healthy Start Association. For more information about Genesee County Healthy Start, call (810) 237-6166.
