CSHCS (Children's Special Health Care Services)
Children's Special Health Care Services is a family centered, community-based
coordinated care program that helps pay for specialized medical treatment, equipment
and supplies of children with chronic long term health conditions. Case
management is offered to assist families with problem solving, to help obtain needed
services from other agencies, and to assist developing advocacy skills for maximum
independence. Family assessment is performed by public health nurses of the local health
department to help identify the needs of all family members. The Parent Participation Program
provides a statewide information and support network for parents who have children with all
types of disabilities. It also allows parents to participate in the development of CSHCS
programs and policies. Diagnostic evaluation is provided for children suspected of having a
chronic illness or disability if families need assistance to pay for evaluations or they are
unable to afford the co-pay required by their insurance to cover the specialist visit.
