RE:
New School Immunization Requirements for 2010-2011
New school immunization requirements are going into effect in Michigan for
the
upcoming school year. These new requirements are:
1.
Two doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for children age 4 and
above who do not have a previous history of the disease.
2.
Pre-teens and adolescents need one dose of meningococcal vaccine.*
3.
Pre-teens and adolescents need one dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular
pertussis (Tdap) if five years have passed since their last dose of
tetanus/diphtheria vaccine.*
*These
vaccines are recommended at age 11
The Genesee County Health Department strongly
recommends that you contact your physician immediately to ensure that your
child is up to date on their immunizations before school begins. Children in
kindergarten, 6th grade, and those entering a new school district
for the first time can be excluded from school if they have not received the
required vaccines. Waiting until the end of August when there is a high
demand for vaccinations may cause delays in scheduling appointments at your
provider’s office and result in missed days of school for your child.
McLaren Visiting Nurse and Hospice in Davison, in
collaboration with the Genesee Intermediate School District and the Genesee
County Health Department, will be providing some community clinics to help
school age children who are unable to receive immunizations from their
physician, meet these new guidelines. Please check with your school
district for further information regarding these clinics.
