Genesee County Health Department’s 15th
Annual
Excellence in Food Service Award Ceremony
The Genesee County Health Department is set to
recognize over 50 food service establishments for excellent sanitation records
and healthy menu choices. A reception for award winners and guests will be held
on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Genesee County Health Department, 630 S.
Saginaw St. in Flint. The award ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. Media
representatives are encouraged to attend.
This year marks the 15th annual presentation of
“Excellence in Sanitation” Awards. Each food service establishment in Genesee
County has been placed in one of twenty-two categories. The winner in each
category was determined by examining the two most recent routine inspection
reports and conferring with the inspecting Sanitarian. Establishments with no
critical violations and the fewest non-critical violations were selected for the
award. Critical violations are those that can lead directly to foodborne
illness; e.g., unsafe food temperature, poor employee
hygiene and
cross-contamination. Examples of non-critical violations include the
cleanliness and condition of walls, floors, ceilings, plumbing repair and
dumpster use. This year a list of
Honorable Mention in Food Sanitation was
created as many food service facilities have improved in this area.
Healthy Lifestyle Awards will be given to food
service establishments that meet stringent nutritional criteria. Awardees must
offer at least 2 different grain products, at least 4 choices of vegetables and
fruit, low-fat or fat free salad dressing if salad is served, a substitute for
French fries, and at least one meat, fish, poultry or meat alternative prepared
using low-fat cooking methods, and trans fat-free foods. The nutrition
standards are adapted from The Dietary Guidelines for Americans
and The Food Guide Pyramid published by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The Genesee County Health Department along with
the Smoke-free Multi-Agency Resource Team (SMART) will announce food
establishments that have received Smoke-free Dining Awards over the past year
for their commitment to be 100% smoke-free. This is the 10th year
that Smoke-free Dining Awards have been presented to local food service
establishments.
A list of award categories and the winners in each
category are linked above.
