RE:  Two local restaurants go smoke-free for the New Year.

John’s Coney Island, located at G-5275 Corunna Road in Flint, and Shap’s Family Restaurant, located at 2520 W. Hill Road in Mundy Township, will be starting the New Year off healthier, as smoke-free environments.  Starting January 1, 2009, for Shap’s and January 2, for John’s, both restaurants will be entirely smoke-free.  Providing a smoke-free environment demonstrates these restaurants care about the health and well-being of their customers and employees.

Both restaurants will be presented with a Smoke-free Dining Award by the Genesee County Health Department and the Smoke-free, Multi-Agency Resource Team (SMART).  John’s Coney Island will be presented their award at 8:00a.m. on January 2, and Shap’s will receive their award at 11:00a.m. on January 6, 2009.  This award recognizes John’s Coney Island and Shap’s Family Restaurant for providing Genesee County residents with a healthy environment as smoke-free restaurants.

”I am going smoke-free for health reasons.  One customer in particular has asthma and is unable to eat at the restaurant because of the smoke.  Now she will be able to come back,” stated Peter Karavitsos, Manager at John’s Coney Island.
