RE:                              Influenza-like illnesses are increasing in Genesee County

Genesee County is currently experiencing a marked increase in influenza activity.  Ongoing disease surveillance of schools, childcare facilities, hospital emergency departments, and health care providers has shown a significant rise in people presenting with influenza-like symptoms within the last week.  Additionally, infection with influenza virus has been confirmed in Genesee County residents this influenza season.

The Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) is reminding residents to take measures to prevent the spread of influenza, including getting vaccinated against influenza, practicing good handwashing and cough and sneeze etiquette, and staying home when sick.

Vaccination is the single best way to protect oneself from influenza.  A recent survey has shown that too few adults are getting the appropriate vaccinations.  In addition to influenza vaccine, adult immunizations include those that protect against whooping cough, tetanus, shingles, pneumonia, and cervical cancer.  Adults should see their health care provider for information on the immunizations available to them and obtain those that are indicated.

Michigan’s flu activity was sporadic until two weeks ago, when a significant increase in influenza-like illness was noted in Southeast Michigan.  The increase has now extended to Genesee County and surrounding areas.

Influenza is a contagious virus that is mainly transmitted from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes near others.  People also may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it, and then touching their mouth or nose.  Some people, such as older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions, are at higher risk for serious flu complications.  These complications include bronchitis or pneumonia and may be life threatening.
