Apartments located at
7245 N. Saginaw St.
in
Mt.
Morris
, is the first identified apartment
building in
Genesee
County
to implement a smoke-free apartment
building policy. All residents in
the 7-unit apartment building have signed leases stating that they and their
guests will not smoke anywhere inside the apartment building.
According
to
Prevention
Research
Center
data from the “Speak to Your
Health” Community Survey conducted in 2005, 75% of
Genesee
County
residents do not smoke, and yet Doerr
apartments offers the only identified smoke-free apartments available in
Genesee
County
. Smoke-free
apartment policies reduce maintenance costs, provide legal protection, attract
new tenants, reduce the turnover of current tenants and provide a healthy
environment for tenants.
“The
Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) and the Smoke-free, Multi-Agency,
Resource Team (SMART) commend Doerr Apartments for making the health of their
tenants a priority by providing smoke-free housing.
More buildings like this would certainly provide relief and a healthier
environment for apartment residents in
Genesee
County
” stated GCHD Health Education

“I feel good about
providing a healthy living environment for tenants who don’t want to be
exposed to secondhand smoke, stated Kay Doerr of Doerr Apartments. “In
addition, lower maintenance costs will help keep rental fees reasonable, and the
risk of fire will be reduced.”
According
to the recent Surgeon General’s Report “The Health Consequences of
Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke,” there is no risk-free level of
exposure to secondhand smoke. For
