Flu Vaccine Soon Available

The Genesee County Health Department will begin offering flu vaccine to clients age 6 months and older during regular immunization clinic hours beginning November 1, 2005 .  There will be a $25.00 charge.  Clients with Medicare Part B, Medicaid, or Commercial Health Plus must bring their card to receive flu vaccine at no cost.  The following people should be vaccinated: all persons 50 years of age or older, all children age 6-23 months, persons age 6 months and older with chronic illness, employees and residents of long-term care facilities, pregnant women, persons 6 months to 18 years receiving chronic aspirin therapy, health care providers (including home care), and household members of high-risk persons.

Influenza is a serious disease, which can infect people of any age. In an average year flu causes 36,000 deaths (mostly among those aged 65 years or older) and more than 200,000 hospitalizations in the United States . The "flu season" in the United States is usually from November through April each year. A flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get the flu.

For further information regarding the flu vaccine, please contact  the Genesee County Health Department, (810) 237-4546 or visit our web site at www.gchd.us.
