Better Life Through Better Health
Free HIV Testing Offered
for National HIV Testing Day
National HIV Testing
Day is June 27th and was established to encourage those
at risk for HIV to be tested for HIV and to become educated about
the disease. Those at the highest risk for HIV and AIDS and best
candidates for testing include individuals who have unprotected
sex or who share needles. HIV testing day will be recognized by
area health and community HIV/AIDS prevention agencies by offering
free HIV antibody testing on June 25, 27, and 28th.
(See attached schedule of times and locations).
The tests can be done on either an
anonymous or confidential basis. Individuals who have the test
done will need to make a return visit to receive test results.
Certified HIV testing counselors will administer the tests and
deliver the results, all of which will be done free of charge at
all sites. The test is performed orally (OraSure) without the use
of needles and is as accurate as a blood test. This test uses a
special cotton pad to draw a specific fluid (not saliva) from the
cheek and gum tissue and that fluid is tested for HIV antibodies.
National HIV Testing Day was
established in 1995 by the National Association of People with
AIDS (NAPWA) to remind and encourage those at risk for HIV to be
tested and learn their HIV status. Early knowledge and treatment
of HIV infection offers positive health benefits and helps to
prevent its further spread. A number of agencies and corporations
have become partners or sponsors in this annual event, including
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SmithKline Beecham
Consumer Healthcare, Cable Positive, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Health
Resources and Services Administration and Abbot Laboratories.
