Better Life Through Better Health
Healthy Start Celebration
The Flint Healthy Start Consortium will host a celebration of
program successes on Monday, June 11, at Antioch Missionary
Baptist Church, 1083 E. Stewart, Flint, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Young ladies from the Healthy Start Initiative (African American
adolescent girls) will present a creative and enriching program
intended to convey how their participation in Healthy Start has
influenced them.
Healthy Start took place in Flint Schools from 1998 through
2001. During this time, several hundred adolescent African
American girls participated in two programs designed to increase
life skills, delay pregnancy and reduce infant mortality rates. A
third program included adolescent moms and was designed to
increase skills, delay/reduce repeat pregnancies, and reduce
infant mortality rates.
African American infant mortality rates and the incidence of
low birth weights in Genesee County have continued to be much
higher than those of other races, and are among the highest in the
state. The Healthy Start initiative is part of a larger,
comprehensive effort to reduce infant mortality rates and the
incidence of low birth weights in Genesee County.
