Genesee County Health Department
Better Life Through Better Health
Breast
and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
October and every month is Breast Cancer Awareness month at the
Genesee County Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program. Breast
cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. This is a sad
fact when early detection increases five year survival rates to more than 92%.
Early detection of cervical cancer has an almost 100% survival rate.
Being a woman is the greatest risk factor for these cancers.
The Health Department recommends yearly clinical breast exams and
mammograms for women 40 and over. All women need to perform monthly breast
self exams.
Access to life-saving tests is a phone call away. Women age 40
and older who do not have Medicare B or managed care insurance can call (810)
257-3840 to find out if they qualify for a free mammogram, clinical breast
exam, pelvic exam and Pap test. The Health Department’s Breast and Cervical
Cancer Control Program is an ongoing cancer screening program in partnership
with local physicians, laboratories, radiologists and clinics. It is
dedicated to decreasing breast and cervical cancer deaths. Funding is provided by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Michigan, county
government and local resources.
