Continued Advisory Against Total Body Contact In The Flint River Through The City Of Flint To The Mt. Morris Road Bridge In Flushing Township

Robert M. Pestronk, Director of the Genesee County Health Department, is continuing to advise people to avoid full body contact with the Flint River, based on current and ongoing river water test results. The continuation of the advisory is due to the discharge into the river of untreated sewage on July 11 & 12, 2000 and the results of Health Department ongoing monitoring of the Flint River since the sewage spill on June 11, 1999.

Mr. Pestronk stated the Department has been, and will continue, monitoring bacteria levels in the Flint River. "This highlights the importance of the continued and regular sampling of the Flint River, which has been conducted by the Department's Environmental Health staff over the past year. We now have excellent background levels for contrast," said Pestronk. Total body contact with the water should be avoided to prevent exposure to organisms that can cause disease. Disease symptoms may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and possibly jaundice, and associated headaches and fatigue.
