Toy Safety Equals Fun

Tis the season for toys and fun. Sometimes what is meant for fun ends in tragedy. Protecting children from unsafe toys is everyone's responsibility. To help, here are toy tips that when used will create a safer playtime.

  • When choosing a toy, match the toy to the child's abilities, age and interests. Read the box for guidelines. A toy that is misused may lead to injury. If the toy is a gift, consider exchanging it or saving it until the child can play with it correctly.
  • Think BIG when choosing toys. All toy parts should be larger than the child's mouth to prevent choking. Toys for older children with small parts should be kept away from younger children.
  • Look for sturdy construction, and avoid sharp edges. If a toy has small parts, make sure they are well secured.
  • To protect eyes and ears, avoid toys that shoot objects or that make loud or shrill noises. Tips of arrows or darts should be blunt, made of soft rubber or flexible plastic, and securely fastened to the shaft.
  • Never buy hobby kits, such as chemistry sets, for children under 12. Provide adult supervision for children ages 12 to 15.
  • Check toys from time to time for breakage and loose parts. A damaged toy should be thrown away or fixed immediately.
  • Teach children to put toys away to prevent trips or falls. Use a toy chest that has a lid that will stay open in any position. Watch for hinges that could pinch. Avoid shelves with sharp edges.

A little planning and supervision will help make a happy time safer. For more information, call the Genesee County Health Department at (810) 257-3833.
