Swimming Pool Safety

Summer is well under way and that means that many of us will head off to our favorite swimming pool to beat the heat. But how much do you know about the water that you and your family swim in? You may wonder what steps are taken to ensure that your swimming experience is a safe one. In the case of public pools, your Genesee County Health Department inspects these pools regularly to help the operators to eliminate potential health and safety hazards. But what about the pool in your own back yard?

Maintenance and supervision of private pools can be just as important from a public health point of view. If a swimming pool is not constructed or maintained properly, disease or serious injury may result. The following items should be checked regularly to ensure the safety of those who use your pool:

  • The pool water should be clean and clear.
  • The pool sides and bottom should be clean.
  • The pool filtration and drainage systems should be operating properly.
  • Use a pool test kit to make sure that the pool pH and chlorine residual are maintained at proper levels at all times.
  • If you have a diving board, make sure that it is stable and is used properly.

It is very important that children and inexperienced swimmers are supervised. Local laws and insurance companies often require fencing around pools to prevent accidental entry by children.

Enjoy the water, but keep it safe!
