SUMMER FIRE SAFETY

During the summer months, people are sometimes involved with activities which require fire. With fire comes the risk of getting burned. By using the following tips, your family can have a fire safe summer!

  • Camping: Build fires in a pit or designated area 5 to 6 feet away from tents and picnic tables. Start the fire with small twigs and pieces of paper. Add deadwood and logs as the fire gets stronger. Never use starter fluid or gasoline. Always keep a pail of water and a shovel with dirt nearby. Never leave the campfire unattended, and keep children away from the flames.
  • Fireworks: Never allow children to use fireworks without adult supervision. Use fireworks outdoors away from houses, flammable materials, and groups of people. Keep a bucket of water nearby. Be very cautious when checking firecracker "duds". Do not attempt to relight fireworks. Soak them in water and throw them away. If the weather is dry, avoid fireworks altogether.
  • Cooking: When using a charcoal grill, use only charcoal starter. Never use gasoline. Once the fire has started, do not add more fuel. Discard ashes in a metal can with a lid away from flammable materials. When using a gas grill, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. After refilling the tank, or when using a direct connection to a gas line, always check to be sure the connections are tight. A soapy water solution placed on joints and pipes allows you to check for leaks. Turn off the tank between uses. Always use charcoal or gas grills outside, keeping a safe distance from the house or campsite. Never leave a hot grill unattended.
