Stopping Germs from Getting You

People are exposed to many germs each day. Some can cause mild to serious diseases. You can protect yourself with some simple and inexpensive steps.

  • Wash hands with warm water and soap, using friction to remove dirt and bacteria. Always wash after changing diapers, using the restroom and before preparing food. This is the most important preventive step.
  • Routinely use a disinfectant or a bleach and water solution to clean surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens. Use a clean dishrag or disposable paper towels.
  • Store food properly and at the right temperature. Cook food thoroughly. Promptly store leftovers in the refrigerator.
  • Take antibiotics only as prescribed by your health care provider. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses, such as colds and the flu. Unnecessary use and prescriptions can create bacterial resistance to an antibiotic.
  • Make sure you and your children get recommended immunizations.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals. They can transmit deadly diseases to you and your pets. Keep your yard free of wild animals by not leaving any food around and by eliminating possible nesting sites.
  • Make sure pets have the appropriate vaccinations and are routinely cared for by a veterinarian. Do not allow them to run free.
