Lawnmower Safety

Each year many people are seriously injured by lawn mowers. Debris thrown by lawnmowers has been clocked at 200 miles per hour. Protect yourself and your family from a summertime mowing injury by being aware of dangers and following these safety steps.

  • Keep young children and pets out of the area when mowing. Do not let children run along side or sit on your lap when using a riding lawnmower.
  • Children under age 12 should never operate a lawnmower alone. Teenagers under age 16 should have adult supervision.
  • Mow only in daylight and when the lawn is dry.
  • Read the manufacturer's manual before operating. Operate the mower at the lowest speed possible. Keep the blades sharp, as dull blades need a higher speed for cutting.
  • Wear eye and hearing protection and sturdy shoes or boots with good traction to prevent slipping and to protect feet. Avoid loose clothing and cover your legs.
  • Pick up stones, toys, metal objects and anything that could become a flying missile.
  • Refuel in a well-ventilated area before starting. Never add fuel to a hot machine. Avoid spilling gasoline.
  • Put all guards in place. Stand clear when starting.
  • Push, do not pull your mower. Mow laterally across a slope, not up and down. Don't use a riding mower on hills or slopes, as they can tip easily.
  • Mow carefully under trees and shrub. Dangerous objects may be hidden.
  • Be sure the area behind is clear before backing-up.
  • Stop the mower and disconnect the spark plug when making repairs, clearing the discharge chute, or changing the cutting height.
