Heart Attacks & Stroke - Real Lady Killers
Heart attacks, strokes and other diseases of the blood vessels are
the number one killer of women in Genesee County. Know the warning signs
for heart attack and stroke. Warning signs may be less noticeable in
women than those experienced by men. Common warning signs for heart
attack include:
- Pressure, fullness, and squeezing in the center of the chest. It
may last for a few minutes or less, and return.
- Pain spreading to the shoulders neck and arms.
- Feelings of discomfort, fainting, shortness of breath and nausea.
Women may experience these symptoms or other less common symptoms
such as abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty
breathing, cold sweats or paleness.
Classic stroke symptoms include:
- Weakness or numbness of the face, arm, leg or one side of the
body.
- Blurred vision, loss of speech, severe headaches, dizziness or
sudden falling.
Prevention works. Reduce risk factors where possible.
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet low in fat and
cholesterol.
- Quit smoking. Avoid secondhand smoke.
- Control your diabetes and blood pressure.
Most importantly, if you suspect you are having a heart attack or
stroke, don't ignore the
signs. Seek medical help immediately.
