Fireproof your Christmas Tree

A preservative can help keep your Christmas tree moist and prevent needles from shedding. Closely follow the directions for this homemade preservative to help make your tree more fireproof:

Ingredients:

  • Two cups of Karo syrup
  • Two ounces of liquid chlorine bleach
  • Two pinches of Epsom salt
  • One-half teaspoon of Borax
  • One teaspoon of chelated iron (purchase from a garden shop or plant store)
  • Hot water

  1. Mix the ingredients in a two-gallon bucket filled with hot water to within one inch of the top. Stir thoroughly, dissolving ingredients.
  2. Make a fresh, level cut an inch above the old cut at the base of the tree trunk. Immediately stand the trunk of the tree in the solution and leave for 24 hours. Keep the remaining solution.
  3. Place your tree in a tree stand that contains a well for watering. When the tree is set-up, fill the well with the solution, using a plastic cup to dip from the bucket. Replenish the solution in the stand every day. Do not miss a day.
  4. Keep this solution out of the reach of small children.
