Cool Tips to Survive
Winter
Winter temperatures can
drop quickly and storms may cause power failures and icy roads. Exposure
to the cold can cause serious health problems, such as hypothermia,
frostbite or injuries from slipping on ice. Prevent cold weather health
risks by following some survival tips. When working or playing outside,
dress warmly. Work slowly and avoid becoming overtired. If you have
heart disease or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s advise
about shoveling snow or doing other work outside. In extreme cold, take
only brief and necessary ventures outside and wear:
-
A hat and scarf or knit
mask to cover face and mouth
-
Sleeves that are snug
at the wrist
-
Mittens (warmer than
gloves)
-
Water-resistant coat
and shoes
-
Several layers of
loose-fitting clothing
Wear clothes made of
tightly woven material such as wool, silk or layers made of
polypropylene to reduce body-heat loss. Avoid cotton and denim. Stay
dry, as wet clothing chills the body quickly. To prevent sweating,
remove extra layers of clothing if too warm. Do not ignore shivering. It
is a first sign that the body is losing heat.
Keep emergency supplies at
home for power outages or when unable to use roads because of a winter
storm. Include:
-
A safe, alternate way
to heat your home
-
Candles, flashlight or
battery operated lantern
-
Bottled water and food
that needs no cooking or refrigeration. Stock a manual can-opener
-
Portable radio
-
Matches and fire
extinguisher
-
First aid kit
-
Snow shovel and rock
salt
