Prevent Your Christmas Tree from Lighting Up

The Christmas tree is a meaningful tradition for the season in some homes. When setting up your tree follow these safety tips.

  • When picking a tree, run your fingers through the needles or shake the tree. If the needles fall off easily, choose another tree.
  • Trees that are cut early are dryer and a greater fire danger than trees cut closer to Christmas. Trim a pre-cut tree at least one inch above the old cut so the tree can "drink". Plunge the trunk into a bucket of water. Leave the tree outside until you are ready to decorate it.
  • Set up your tree in a cool location. Avoid an area close to heating appliances or the fireplace. Keep the tree out of high traffic areas and away from stairways and doors.
  • Secure the tree so that it cannot be knocked over by pets or a small child.
  • Be sure the tree lights are UL listed. Never use more than three strings of lights on one circuit. Check strings of lights before using them to ensure that the wires are not exposed or damaged.
  • Be able to turn off the lights without having to crawl under the tree. Do not leave the lights on when leaving the house or going to bed. Never use candles as tree decorations.
  • Keep the tree moist by filling the stand container with water every day.
  • Check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
